These hats are based on styles worn by actress Audrey Hepburn both in and out of character. They utilise a variety of techniques including blocking in felt, sinamay and buckram, flat pattern making, hand binding, inserting petersham and attaching wire.
As a massive cowboy hat fan, it only made sense to try my hand at making them! As part of this project, I also investigated making my own millinery stiffener using shellac which resulted in a stiff, protective hat that can still be manipulated when steamed. I also enjoyed getting to work a little with leather, making interior sweat bands from it.
